When it comes to seeing your primary care provider, not all appointments are the same.
Wellness visits (also called preventive visits) and problem visits each play an important role in keeping you healthy. Understanding the difference can help you schedule the right appointment and avoid unexpected surprises about insurance coverage.
Wellness Visits
A wellness visit focuses on your long-term health and is a regular check-in that identifies health risks early and keeps you up to date on screenings. These include appointments such as annual physicals, well-child checks and well-women exams and focus on your long-term health.
During a wellness visit, your provider may:
- Review your medical and family history
- Check your vitals, including blood pressure, heart rate, height and weight
- Review your medications
- Discuss nutrition, exercise, sleep and other healthy habits
- Review recommended vaccines
- Discuss screenings (like mammograms and colonoscopies)
The goal of a wellness visit is to help you stay healthy and identify concerns before they become more serious.
Insurance Coverage for Wellness Visits
Many health plans cover a wellness visit with a primary care physician and a well-woman exam with an OB/GYN each year at no cost to you. Check with your insurance provider prior to your appointment, as coverage depends on your specific plan. Medicare offers a “Welcome to Medicare” preventive visit during the first 12 months of your enrollment and an annual wellness visit every 12 months after your first year of enrollment.
Problem Visits
A problem visit focuses on a specific health issue that needs evaluation or treatment. These are the appointments you schedule when you're experiencing symptoms or have a medical problem you'd like your provider to address, including:
- A cough, fever, flu or other illnesses
- Ear pain or sinus symptoms
- A rash or other skin concern
- Headaches or dizziness
- New joint or back pain
- Management of a stable chronic condition, such as diabetes or high blood pressure
- Medication side effects or questions about treatment
During a problem visit, your provider will focus on the concern that brought you in. Depending on your symptoms, they may perform an exam, order testing, prescribe medication, recommend additional treatment or refer you for follow-up care with a specialist.
Insurance Coverage for Problem Visits
A problem visit is billed as an office visit. You may have a copay, deductible or other out-of-pocket costs, depending on your insurance plan.
Combination Visits
Sometimes patients are due for their annual wellness visit but also have a new health concern, medicine changes or questions about managing a stable chronic condition. In many cases, your provider can address both during the same appointment.
For example, you may come in for your annual wellness visit but also want to discuss persistent knee pain or a new skin rash. Your provider can often review your preventive care while also evaluating your specific concern.
Because preventive care and treatment of a medical problem are different types of services, they have to be billed separately. Depending on your insurance plan, you might have to cover a copay for the problem-focused portion of the visit.
If you know you have both preventive care needs and a specific health concern, let your care team know when scheduling your appointment. This helps your provider plan enough time to address both whenever possible.
